He was born on 25 July 1929 in Tezpur, Assam. He completed his studies from University of Calcutta and University of Cambridge After returning to India, he started his legal career as a Barrister In Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court. Mr. Somnath Chatterjee was a member of Communist Party from 1968 to 2008. In 1971, he got elected and became the member of Lok Sabha. He was elected 9 times only not in 1984, when he losed in Lok Sabha Constituency seat to Mamta Bannerjee. From 1989 to 2004, he was the leader of Lok Sabha Party. On 4 July 2004, he was declared 14th Speaker of Lok Sabha. After the death of Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, He was the 2nd such protem speaker, who had the distinction of getting the post of speaker. In 1996, he was awarded with Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. Come let’s know what are the roles and responsibilities of Lok Sabha Speaker. They are – The candidate must be an Indian citizen. The candidates age should be above 25 years old.
